Sketch For Strings (BS059 - 2023)

Fans of post-serial atonality, before you get too excited, I do not believe there is any family relationship linking Edinburgh’s Harold Nono to a certain postwar Italian master (although I could be wrong). Sketch For Strings is certainly not offering harmonically challenging or especially complex techniques but it is an intriguing journey through some dark, skillfully organised chordplay by the strings, playing off against an electronic and ambient backdrop of vinyl scratch noise and barely audible spoken word. It is certainly inventive and the church-like aura of the distant voices underlines the nod to pre-baroque modality (or perhaps to more recent purveyors of modality like Gorecki and Part). Anyway, it is a compelling piece that I am happy to recommend to you. Just shy of eleven minutes of musical and sonic exploration
[Neil March - Trust The Doc]

When you are able to create unique compositions that as far as I’m concerned are part of the most beautiful things that have been written, you’re feeling most privileged to know this composer, Harold Nono. Love so much all the sounds that you can hear in the background, like the spoken word. And this is only a sketch!
